Address
Charlevoix Rd,
Boyne City, MI 49712
Phone
231-347-0991

Size: 119 acres

Trail: A 2.5 mile trail system includes some rolling hills and views of Lake Charlevoix overlooking Boyne City.

Land Description: In addition to the topography of the land, The Hill Preserve includes a nice diversity of both pines and hardwoods within its boundaries. Apple trees have risen from the seeds of the old farm orchard and lilac bushes reveal the old farmstead.

History: In 1966, the families of Dr. Gene Herzog, Dr. John Herzog, and Dr. Lou Mrstik purchased this property for their family to have an “up north” destination. It was used for family gatherings and enjoyment for several decades. In 1996, the families donated a conservation easement to protect it from future development and in 2011, the land was donated to LTC as a nature preserve.

Directions: From downtown Boyne City at the intersection of Lake and Water St., go north on Lake for one mile. Lake Street turns into W. Michigan. Go 0.1 miles on W. Michigan and turn right on Charlevoix St. Go 1.6 miles north on Charlevoix St. to Clute Rd. Turn right onto Clute Rd. Go .7 mile to parking area on your right.

This Nature Preserve is lovely. It has hard packed and well marked trails through pine forests and clearings. On Trail 8 you see views of Lake. Charlevoix and there is a raspberry patch, too. You can hear birds and other animals. It was serene and we didn't see anyone else while we were there.

First of all, we love The Hill. We will continue to hike here. This morning, after parking at the space off Charlevoix St/Old Horton Bay Rd we were rushed by a loose pit bull, who lives next to the trail. Technically, the dog was on her own property. If my husband had not stopped her, she would have come on to the trail. Our 4 and 2yo were walking and our 5mo was in a chest harness. We had our small dog on leash, as required. We felt our family was in danger from this dog. We will be parking at the spaces off Clute Rd from now on. There are no trash cans, bathrooms, or water. The view from the top, trail 8, is gorgeous. There are 2 benches to admire the vista from.

Beautiful trails! Rarely do I encounter anyone while out for a little trek. Well maintained and offers a variety of views and vegetation changes. Highly recommend if you're looking for a leisurely cross-country hike. Kids and pet friendly.

We enjoyed the Preserve. However, the map online is not the same as the map onsight... unfortunately, we didn't know that until long into the hike. It would be nice to have both say the same.

We walked three loops on the trail. The paths are very well marked and kept up. The preserve was not crowded; we only met one couple and a man and his dog. Very enjoyable.
